Amazon affiliates: get started making money with Amazon commissions

There's no doubt that is a money-making monster, not only for its founder but for everyone involved.

Did you know that basically everyone with a computer and an internet connection can make money with Amazon? This is especially true for bloggers. has a wide variety of options when it comes to using its platform as a money printing machine: you can become an Amazon seller, you can offer your services, you can sell your own apps and self-publish your books or music.

But there is a more novel approach for bloggers and publishers to money making with Amazon by becoming an Amazon affiliate, which will allow you to make money off telling your readers about stuff on Amazon without having to stock products of your own.

What is an Amazon affiliate?

To understand what an Amazon affiliate is, you need to learn what affiliate marketing is first, and affiliate marketing is nothing but promoting products sold by others in order to drive a sale, and earn money by commission. In this case you will be earning money off of products being sold on the Amazon marketplace.

How do you become an Amazon affiliate?

Becoming an Amazon affiliate is as simple as going to the Amazon homepage and logging in to your Amazon account, then scrolling all the way down to the “make money with us” section and clicking on “become an affiliate”.

Alternatively, here's a direct link to become an Amazon associate.

Note that this is for which has a United States audience. You can also promote products to other countries with their own local Amazon (such as or, for example). You don't need to live in the country of the Amazon that you're referring people to. So, if you're in the UK, for example, you may still want to link people to (the US version) if most of your blog readers are in the United States. It's up to you, depending on your blog audience.

How do you make money with Amazon as an affiliate?

To make money with Amazon as an affiliate you will simply have to promote products from the Amazon marketplace and with over a million products available it should not be hard to find a good product and a ready-to-buy audience for it.

And there lots of product categories that you can promote; from video games to televisions, from PC components to toys and jewelry.

What’s more, you will be able to promote products from broader categories such as Amazon gift cards, digital music, and Amazon devices, with commissions ranging from as low as 4% to as high as 10% depending on the category.

Now, how do you promote these items to make money? The answer to that is that you have multiple channels to promote your offers from, the most popular being your blog, but you can easily use social media pages as well.

You can link to any Amazon product by simply grabbing the item affiliate URL from Amazon itself.

You can also use customized product links to show product information on your affiliate sites, as well as stylish graphical banners.

All you need do is offer value to your referrals by creating product-oriented content to guide people into making informed purchasing decisions.

Why Amazon is the best affiliate programs for beginners

Source: cnet

We already mentioned that Amazon is a loved and trusted brand, but how far does this go? Well, is the number one e-commerce retailer, visited by over hundreds of millions of people in any given month. Ask anyone where they last bought something online and they'll probably tell you that they got it from Amazon.

Most people already have an Amazon account and since people already love and trust Amazon, it's much easier for you to convert sales there – unlike if you were sending people to purchase somewhere where they haven't heard of.

You'll convert sales on Amazon better than anywhere else online.

High commissions that add up

With a base rate of 4%, you might think that making money on Amazon would take you a lot of time, but keep in mind that these rates add up with each sale, and that rates can go up to 10% depending on the product category.

You earn by each sale, not by product

Basically, every affiliate network out there will pay you only when you make a sale for a specific product or service, but Amazon makes you money for every purchase made by anyone that lands on Amazon through any of your affiliate links.

So, it doesn’t matter if you are promoting treadmills and somebody instead buys a TV through your Amazon affiliate link; you make money off each sale! This means that if someone ends up making a $5,000 purchase through a link leading to a $10 product, you still make a commission on that $5,000 sale!

It is easy to set up

Becoming an Amazon affiliate will only take you about 5 to 10 minutes of your time. You will simply need to login to your Amazon account, then sign up to the Amazon associates program and you are good to go.

The days of waiting a week to be accepted into an affiliate network are over. Besides, it is really, really easy to integrate the affiliate links to your blog.

Find popular and best-selling categories

What many bloggers do when getting started with promoting Amazon products is to simply select to promote niche products that belong in very popular categories. A good way to find popular categories and best-seller products is by going to “”, where you will find up to date and real-time information about which products and niches are the most popular among Amazon customers.

You shouldn’t be surprised to learn that the most popular niche products are consumer goods and everyday products from categories such as clothing, electronics, pet care, baby care, personal care, appliances, automotive, fitness, sports, and home improvement, and you can find these popular categories listed on the left side of the page.

Looking at the bestsellers tells you what's already selling on Amazon. However, it's important to think about your audience when recommending products. If you just randomly choose products, you may not be thinking about what products your audience would actually like. If the products that you feature on your blog aren't relevant to your blog or your audience, you're not going to succeed.

Always think about your audience first and choose products that you've personally tried and can recommend or that you can list as being suitable for your audience.

What you need to get started

In order to get started promoting Amazon products, you're going to need a self-hosted blog.

Even if you plan on promoting from social platforms such as YouTube etc, Amazon's going to want to see that you have your own blog/website set up in order to approve your affiliate program application.

Never build your blog on someone else's platform such as, Tumblr etc. Never build your business on someone else's land. ALWAYS build your blog on your own self-hosted WordPress installation.

If you haven't yet got that set up, you can follow our instructions for that here:

> Start Your Own Profitable Blog

You'll need to have that ready in order to get started making money with Amazon. Amazon will want to see that you have a proper website with good content before they approve your affiliate application.

Follow that guide, if you haven't already, and get yourself a few posts on your blog before setting up your affiliate account with Amazon.

Creating your Amazon associates account

Once you already have your blog with a few blog posts on it, head over to Amazon Associates.

You'll need to have your name or business name, your address, website URL and a few other details in order to get started.

NOTE: In order to promote Amazon products, you have to confirm that your blog isn't aimed at kids under the age of 13.

When setting up your account, here are a few key things you may be asked for: (These questions may change for different users so don't be alarmed if your questions are different)

  1. In the “Profile” section you will create a profile for your affiliate websites. In the “associates store ID” enter a simple name that you can remember, as this will be your Amazon associate ID and it'll be the tag that you'll use in the URL when you link to Amazon.
  2. Now enter a brief description of your affiliate website in the “what are your websites or mobile apps about?” field. Here you need to put what your blog is about, the topics that you cover and who your main audience is/will be.
  3. In the “Which of the following topics best describes your websites or mobile apps?” display boxes, select a primary and a secondary category. For example, that may be something like Home and Health, for example.
  4. In the “what type of Amazon items do you intend to list on your websites or mobile apps” part, check all the common product types that you plan to promote on your site. Don't just select them all. Be selective about the ones that most match your audience and blog topic.
  5. In the “what type are your websites or mobile apps?” display boxes select “Content or niche website” as your primary category and a secondary category of your own choice.
  6. In the “how do you drive traffic to your websites?” section, check all the options that best describe your traffic sources. If you follow the training that we're going to recommend, your sources will be search engines and social traffic.
  7. In the “how do you utilize your websites and apps to generate income?” boxes select what other types of monetization strategies are integrated into your Amazon affiliate websites, such as “display advertising” or “affiliate marketing”. Select “Amazon associates is the only way I monetize my site” if you only use the Amazon associates program to monetize your site.
  8. Fill the information required in the “How do you usually build links?”, the “How many total unique visitors do your websites and apps get per month?”, the “What is your primary reason for joining the Amazon Associates Program?” and the “How did you hear about us?” sections to finish here.

Creating content to promote Amazon products

When you're just getting started there are a couple of easy ways to create content that promotes Amazon products. There are many advanced ways that you can do this and we'll cover those in later training.

However, the two best ways to start are to create one of two blog posts:

  1. Product Reviews
  2. Product List Posts

In order to get started with product reviews, we have a separate blog post on that for you here: How to Create an Effective Physical Product Review

This is basically where you review a product from Amazon and include referral links to Amazon. We always recommend that you do this with a product that you've personally used so that it's an honest review. People are often going online to find a good product to achieve a particular task and they're also always looking to read more details about something when making a purchase.

What's nice about review articles on your blog is that those people looking for a review are almost always in a position ready to purchase something. You usually only search for a review of a product when you're looking to purchase that item. Therefore, you don't have to convince them that they need this product – they're already looking for it. That makes it an easy sale for you.

The other type of blog content that's good for referring Amazon sales is a list post. This is where you create a list post of some select products. For example, you could do something like “The Top 10 Blenders For Smoothie Lovers” or “The Best Home Gym Equipment For Beginners”. These types of posts also do extremely well and they often mean you don't have to always have the item in order to review it. For these articles, you're not doing a review; you're just listing each product and writing a paragraph about each one.

List type product posts are a good blog content choice to get started with if you're a beginner.

How to generate Amazon affiliate links

There is a really easy way to get your affiliate links without you ever having to leave the Amazon marketplace. Once you've already signed up for your Amazon associates account, simply look for any product on the Amazon marketplace by navigating through categories or by using the search bar, all while logged into your account.

Click on the product to access the product page. Now look for the “Amazon Associates SitesStripe” bar on top. You will be able to get your affiliate links from where it reads “get link”. You can get “text” link, “image” link, “text plus image” link and links to share on Facebook and Twitter.

Click on “text” and you will get both a “short link” and a “full link” to insert on your site. Click on “image” and you will be able to get an image link. Here you can select whether to get a link to a small-sized image, a medium-sized image or a large sized image. You can preview the image link as it would look on your site.

Click on “text plus image” and you will get an affiliate link that will feature the full offer on your site, just like it would appear in the Amazon marketplace.  You can choose to open the link on a new tab and also to feature your affiliate link with or without a border. You can preview how the affiliate link looks on your site.

Most of the time you'll want to just use simple text link as, from our experience, this is what converts the best.

Inserting your affiliate links on your blog

Inserting affiliate links into your content is really easy. Inside your WordPress post, highlight the appropriate text and then click on Insert/edit link. Paste in your affiliate link here and click the Enter/Apply button.

There are lots of different ways of linking to Amazon. You can include your affiliate link in text such as:

Click here to get yours on

Get it for the best price on

Or you can help with the conversions and put things such as:

Get yours with free shipping on Amazon here

Check out the reviews of customers that purchased this on Amazon

Other Amazon affiliate marketing extended strategies

Now that we've covered the basics of getting started with Amazon associate, there are a few other beginner strategies you may want to delve into.

Create a lifestyle section on your blog

One of the easiest ways to become an influencer and an authority is by starting a lifestyle blog section on your blog. Doing this will allow you to write about your niche in a way that goes beyond descriptions and marketing; you can start to cover the topics that work well for you in your life.

A lifestyle blog is a place where you discuss lifestyles centered around the niche that you promote on your niche affiliate site. Use your lifestyle blog to allow your visitors to foster conversation between you and your audience, which will increase the number of visits to your affiliate site as well as your ranking in search engines and also help you get discovered on social media.

Include a sign up form for your blog

It would be wise to have a subscription form on your blog because it gives you a way to get your blog readers to stay up to date with new content that you put out because you can email them every time you have a new blog post. When you have a new product review or product list post you can email it out to your subscribers. This gets you more traffic to your newer posts and is a great way to increase your revenue by promoting the content to people that are already your fans instead of relying on new visitors.

Create lead magnets focused on your niche

A niche focused lead magnet such as a giveaway ebook will help you to build your email subscriber following. You can give away a free ebook when people sign up to your email list. This gives you a way of incentivizing your readers to sign up and become more long-term followers.  Growing your email list becomes really easy when you offer people a reward for signing up.

It's important to remember that Amazon doesn't like you using affiliate links in emails or in your ebooks but you can direct people back to your blog posts that contain the affiliate links.

Pay attention to your readers

The comments section of your affiliate site can be a great source of information about what types of products people care about and also about the types of products that people are actively buying.

Pay special attention to recommendations among customers in the comments section. Pay attention to your readers' reactions to recommendations and then apply what you learned about people’s preferences and get ready to start creating awesome product content about them.

Keep readers updated on daily or weekly Amazon deals

Having a “deals” section on your Amazon affiliate pages can sound impractical at first because you already know that the “deals” section on the Amazon marketplace shows deals and cool finds from every category at random. But it is a good idea to have a separate “Today’s deals” tab on your blog because you can list the deals that you specifically recommend or that are related to your specific blog topic.

It's the kind of thing that people will stop by regularly to check out. It's casual and people will love taking a look there just for curiosity’s sake before leaving your site, which can easily lead to an impulse purchase.
